Best Chef Knives

There is no skipping the chef’s knife if you want to make anything as simple as dinner at home. The chef knife’s importance in food preparation is second to none. It is the knife you’ll go to for everything, and I can’t stress how important it is to buy only the best chef knives.

The chef knife can perform various types of tasks. Everything from slicing zucchini to cubing large cuts of meat can be done using a chef knife, which is why it isn’t that unusual to see the chef’s knife getting replaced time and time again when the rest of the knives in a good knife set remain in mint condition.

The common chef knives range from 6 inches to 10 inches in length, and many high end models have different sizes to choose from. Here is the list of best chef knives. Only the best of the best chef knives made it, the rest got chopped.

Wusthof Classic Chef KnifeBest Chef Knife – Wusthof Classic Chef Knife

For most of us who’re used to Western knives, we love Wusthof for the high quality in their Classic German knives. This is the best chef knife for those who can afford it and one of the top rated chef knives in the world.

When it comes to cutting evenly sized ingredients, balance is the key, and the full tang blade of this top rated chef knife nested in a comfortable triple-riveted handle has it balanced evenly in an excellent grip.

The Wusthof Classic does not place too much weight on your wrist so you will never tire out quickly, which is why the professional chef and the home cook who cooks a lot would love having this particular chef knife in their arsenal.

Like every other forged knife on the market, you’ll need to keep this knife honed and meticulously hand wash it to prevent scratches on the steel. The only beef I have with this knife is the price.

Victorinox 40520Best Budget Chef Knife – Victorinox 40520 Chef Knife

Buy it here at Amazon
For the home chef on a tight budget, I reckon you should stick with the Victorinox 8 inch chef knife. This is a stamped knife so you’d be able to do away with the sharpening and maintenance for quite a while.

Many people also like stamped knives because they are very light in weight. Don’t let the weight fool you though, the Victorinox is a hardy and heavy duty knife with a neat handle.

This 8 inch blade has a 2 inch width which I find is easy to handle and maneuver while using this chef knife. At this price point there is surprisingly a lifetime warranty that comes with the knife.

shun classicBest Japanese Chef Knife – Shun Classic Chef Knife

Buy it here at Amazon
The Shun Classic chef’s knife is one beautiful piece of cutlery and certainly one of the best chef knives you can buy. If slicing thin cuts is what you really need, this chef’s knife definitely gets the job done with extra excellence. I have to admit I’m a sharpness snob and I love this Japanese knife.

The Damascus layers on the high carbon stainless steel gives the Shun Classic a beautiful finish. The hard VG-10 Japanese steel makes this knife a good choice for cutting meat and poultry.

This freakingly sharp knife stays sharp but you shouldn’t use this chef knife for the wrong job like prying or chopping through bones because the tip is thin and prone to breakage if mishandled.

Henckels Twin Four Star Chef KnifeBest Value Chef Knife – Henckels Twin Four Star Chef Knife

Buy it here at Amazon
The Henckels Twin Four Star is one of the best chef knives for anyone who loves German knives. It comes sharp and stays that way for a longer time than many other forged knives.

This German-made piece of cutlery has a handle that is peculiar though well made and non slip. You’d either immediately fall for it or despise it.

The Twin Four Star chef knife is designed to be a balanced knife. It is easy to wield and is quite an easy tool to use. The best part is that this Henckels chef knife is much more affordable than the Wusthof.

So which of these top chef knives is the best chef knife for you?

  1. Since I have become the primary cook in the house, I’ve needed a decent storage place for my good knives. This fits the bill. It holds virtually all my long knives and some of the shorter ones, as well. Now every time I need a knife, it’ handy and convenient. I love it.The only drawback is that my chef knives are too big for their slots in the block, but I am planning on getting some different ones very soon that will fit.

    1. Dear Hicham,
Your chef knives should fit your hand rather than the block. The standard chef knife in the market is 8-inch, but from high end brands such as Wusthof and Shun you can find more varieties of chef knife sizes from as short as 4.5-inch to 12-inch.

  2. When the time I become a housewife and mainly cook dishes at home, I started focus on searching more info on nice set of knives. Your post are so informative and I would buy some different types of knives.

  3. i’ve done prep work on a line as well as creating whole menus for home dinner parties. over the last few years i find my knives getting smaller. for example, i use a 6″ chef’s knife and i really like it. i am rarely cutting up a whole antelope and when working in a small confined space, smaller is better.
