Searching for a good and reliable bread knife? You probably make your own bread and cakes or buy them whole. If you do, a bread knife is definitely needed as no other knife in the kitchen will cut them well.
Bread knives are designed to cut soft, spongy food. They have serrated blades to let you cut through the soft bread without squashing or crushing it. They are pretty unique when it comes to kitchen knives. They are not meant to cut by the pressing or pushing motion. You should apply the sawing motion, which is commonly frown upon in cutting ingredients for cooking.
Bread knives usually come in sizes between six inches to ten inches. Shorter ones usually have smaller serrations while the longer ones have bigger serrations. The blade edge of a bread knife is straight to ensure a full cut all the way to the board. There is also an offset from the serrated blade with respect to the handle. This design makes sure that your knuckles will not touch the board when you’ve cut all the way through.
Best Bread Knives
Victorinox 47547 Bread Knife
This is the all-time best bread knife. It’s a stamped knife, cheap, thin and flexible, and certainly very light. All qualities that would make a cooking knife look like something from the dollar store, but this bread knife cuts bread like a champ.
The serrated blade is a 10-1/4-inch long, and the length is fully usable as the knife doesn’t have a bolster. There’s a slight curve to the blade which is designed to let the knife enter the soft bread or food easily without pulling it apart. Aside from the design, this bread knife is really sharp so go ahead and apply it to fresh and soft breads out of the oven.
Oxo Good Grips Bread Knife
How can this knife be wrong? With 10 bucks you can bake and slice and save hundreds of dollars from not buying artisan breads each year. With the serrated edge like a saw, this bread knife surprisingly cuts bread with minimal crumbs and as easily as a hot knife through butter.
JA Henckels International Bread Knife
If you’re looking for a high quality bread knife, this is the one to buy. The Henckels’ International line is at their lower end but this is still a great German steel forged knife that outshines many other brands. The serrated edge is a nice touch for a forged knife as you won’t need to hone this. 7-inch is slightly short for some; those who want to slice large loaves may not like this bread knife.
Zyliss Bread Knife with Sheath
It’s not your usual knife design but this bread knife aces it when you need one for camping. The sheath is handy for both travel and storing this knife in the drawer if you don’t have an extra slot in the knife block. The black color gives it a unique look.
